Well today I am feeling very happy because... ...I managed to get hold of an HJC "Big Dog" Helmet in brand new condition! These are super rare. I have only ever seen one for sale on eBay which was a size EXTRA SMALL (no good for anyone). I have got mine in size MEDIUM (the most popular size of helmet) and I'm well chuffed. So what do you think?...

the only thing that worrys me is the age how old is it Not very. It's not been used/been outside anyway. And that's the main thing. You can buy a decent helmet that's years old if its been sat in the back of a shop on a shelf. As nothing has compromised the helmet, so its fine! I was actually re-told all this on Sunday by an Advanced Instructor as part of my learning. Age only applies to helmets for certain reasons. Here is a rough guide. CHEAP HELMETS (Plastic Polycarbonate): The Sun's UV rays makes plastic brittle (yellowed effect). A cheap helmet usually uses cheap inner materials too so always check your head comfort etc. - Routine Replace every 2 to 3 years ish. MEDIUM PRICE HELMETS (Fibreglass): Check stitching and inner comfort for any degrading. But look after the helmet well and these should last a long time and be routine replaced every 5 to 7 ish. EXPENSIVE HELMETS: (Carbon Kevlar Composite): These almost last forever if looked after correctly. Many many years anyway.

Even if you try searching on Google for one, all you get is some Chinese copy things. Must have been made in very limited numbers or something? I dunno. HJC made the helmet, but its Rich Art Concepts who have done the graphics/painted artwork. Its has Rich Art Concepts signature and the words "BIG DOG" on the back. Looks nice.

Haha awesome! Thank for that I'll invest in one when I get a flashy lid. My one atm is a matte black AGV K3 helmet which is more a stealthy look so a Mohawk wouldn't suit it lol.

You can keep it good for years yourself after that. The 5 years is just warranty. Warranty is just business/money talk not the overall life of the helmet. And HJC should be good for 5 to 7 years and more. All depends how you look after it. If you just wear it and that's it then 5 years is probs right. Maybe even less!!! Hair gel/products deteriorate the inner lining of helmets. So does natural hair grease! But inners are removable and can be put through the washing machine. You can clean the shell of your helmet, but harsh chemicals can reduce its life. But using soft soaps or proper helmet cleaner will increase its life. Using UV protection solution on your helmet will increase the life even more! So its pretty much impossible to give a helmet a "LIFE" as such. Someone with a £20 cheap helmet, but who takes very good care of it, could last them 3 years and more. Someone with a £500 expensive helmet, that doesn't give a toss and treats it badly, probably wont last more than a year! So there is no exact science as such. You just need to get the best helmet you can sensibly afford and look after it.

Probs a double D as most "more up-market" helmets are. Cheaper helmets are usually that shit seat-belt type thing. You are always warned against them seatbelt fasteners on your CBT or full test etc.
